May 1 Deadline to Apply

Do you ever wonder what it takes to lead the largest organization of professional chefs in the U.S.? I invite all American Culinary Federation (ACF) students and apprentices to enter the 2013 Lead Like "Mike" Contest for the chance at unparalleled access to culinary leaders and top-notch networking opportunities. One student or apprentice will be selected to attend the 2013 ACF National Convention in Las Vegas, July 21-25, to work with me during the convention.

Five finalists will be selected for phone interviews and the winner will be announced by June 7.

The winning student or apprentice will receive:

1. Airfare within the continental U.S., Alaska or Hawaii to Las Vegas

2. Accommodations at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

3. Full-convention registration

Who Can Enter?

Applicants must be...

■ A first-, second- or third-year full-time culinary student enrolled in either a degree-granting, diploma or certificate postsecondary culinary program, or an American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Apprenticeship Program

■ An ACF member in good standing since January 31, 2013.

■ At least 18 years old.

■ Available July 20-26, 2013.

■ Organized, punctual and personable.

■ A leader who can communicate well with diverse groups and maintain a professional image.

To enter, submit the following information:

■ A completed and signed application.

■ A 500-word essay in English, no smaller than 12 point font, describing how this mentoring opportunity will help you achieve your goal of being a culinary leader. The essay must be an original work and should not reference Michael Ty, CEC®, AAC®, more than twice.

■ A high-resolution color photo in appropriate chef apparel.

■ A signed letter of endorsement from your department chair and/or school/apprenticeship director on official letterhead.

Contest Guidelines

■ Guests may not accompany the winner.

■ All submissions become property of ACF.

■ ACF reserves the right to contact faculty or administrators at any entrant's school or apprenticeship program to confirm enrollment and verify endorsement.

■ Entrants agree, by signing a release waiver, to allow ACF to use their photos, names and essays in promotional materials. ACF will give appropriate attribution, but compensation will not be provided.

■ Finalists should be prepared for a comprehensive, professional phone interview with Michael Ty, CEC®, AAC®, and an ACF staff person.

■ Failure to follow contest guidelines and essay requirements will lead to disqualification.

■ In the event that there are no qualified candidates, ACF reserves the right to cancel the contest.

Brett BrennanLast year's winner, Brett Brennan of Grand Island, N.Y., is a culinary-arts student at Niagara County Community College, Sanborn, N.Y., and member of ACF of Greater Buffalo New York. For Brennan, the experience of learning from Ty was indescribable. "This was my first national convention, and to tell you the truth, I walked into it with an open mind and walked away speechless," said Brennan. Kristin Swaggart, CC, 2011 winner, is a member of ACF Northwest Wine Country Chapter. She went on to graduate from Walla Walla Community College, Walla Walla, Wash., in June 2011, and is now assistant director of nutrition services at Kennewick School District for Sodexo USA, Kennewick, Wash. She attributes this mentorship as a large part of why she received the job.

Premiere chef Gordon Ramsay spices up the tenth season of Hell's Kitchen with 18 new competitors. These aspiring restaurateurs will brave Ramsay and his fiery command of the kitchen as he once again puts the competitors through an intense culinary academy to prove they possess the right combination of ingredients to win the life-changing grand prize: a head chef position at Gordon Ramsay Steak in the Paris Hotel, Las Vegas, NV.

5.   Kitchen Nightmares-
Friday nights at 8pm/7c    Season Premier 10-26-12
Chef Gordon Ramsay returns for a fourth season as he treks across the country to help fledgling restaurants turn their luck and their businesses around. With the economy hitting the restaurant business hard, these restaurateurs are looking to Chef Ramsay to wake them up from their KITCHEN NIGHTMARES.

6.   MasterChef-

Award-winning chef Gordon Ramsay, restaurateur Joe Bastianich and acclaimed chef Graham Elliot return for Season Three of the culinary smash hit MASTERCHEF.   This season will feature contestants from all walks of life representing 23 states - including a stock broker, a professional opera singer, an emergency physician, a food photographer, a plastic surgeon, as well as the first blind cook to enter the competition - all with the hopes of turning their culinary dream into a reality. The hopefuls will prepare their signature dish and present them to the distinguished MASTERCHEF judging panel:

Hotel Hell features Gordon Ramsay on a quest to fix horrid hotels, awful inns and just plain bad bed and breakfasts.

8.   Bar Rescue-                         Times TBA
Spike's hit original series Bar Rescue is looking all over the country for candidates to have their bar rescued by the one and only Jon Taffer, one of the country's top restaurant and bar consultants. With each venue, Taffer and his team of experts delve into every business facet of running a bar, from creating a profitable drink/food menu, to music selection, to managing crowds.

9.    Travel network: Hotel Impossible
Anthony Melchiorri-Melchiorri brings his expertise as the “hotel fixer” to Travel Channel’s new original series- Sunday evenings.

What is a Learning Center/Help Forum?  A Learning Center is a resource area, where we have loaded forms, checksheets, course related information that you can use when you are taking online courses.  We have gathered up all of this information in this one place for you to use.  You can also find job leads, internship information, industry approved websites and other information in this one spot.

If you are a new student to the online realm, then start with the new student tab which has lots of information on how to navigate courses.  For more experienced students please use whatever you need. 

We would like to welcome you to the program. As an online student you can take classes while working in the hospitality industry. You can post your assignments at any time before the deadline, and access the information in the library at any time. Enjoy!
