Hi Georgia,

It depends…  There are different products in the ColorMunki line, one for only calibrating your display and others that not only calibrate the display, but can also read printed targets to create printer color profiles.  They are two different types of devices.  The one that can only calibrate a display (ColorMunki Display) is what is called a colorimeter and can only read light being transmitted such as from your monitor.  It does not have a way to project light to read the color on actual surfaces such as the color swatches on a printed target.  This type of device is called a spectrophotometer and can handle both types of situations.  We require specifically the ColorMunki Photo for our color management and printing class as you will need to learn to not only calibrate your display, but also how to make custom color profiles for your printer and the different papers you want to use.  This will allow you to produce the best possible prints both in color accuracy and fidelity within the limits of what the combination of your printer and that specific paper can achieve.  If you already have a ColorMunki Display, I would use it to calibrate your display so that you can trust what you are seeing  when editing your images, but you will need the ColorMunki Photo when you take any color management and printing classes.  If you need to purchase the ColorMunku Photo be sure to take advantage of your educational discounts and price compare between Mac-On-Campus and B&H Photo.  Also, if you need to purchase both a ColorMunki Photo and a color printer that meets the Department requirements, Ai also offers a Color Kit that can be added to your tuition and shipped to you if you qualify.  Your Academic and Financial Aid Counselors will have more information about the Kit and it is also listed in the Photography Department Database at:  http://fms12-010-dca.oditech.com/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=PH_Equipment&-loadframes  (Click on AiP Equipment Kit Information)
